What if our goal in life isn't to collect things but experiences? What if we lived our lives savoring times together with our family and friends. Enjoying moments of telling our story, shared experiences, belly laughs, and heartfelt connections. What would your life look like if the goal was to collect as many experiences as possible in this lifetime?
Research shows that it's not material things that make us happy but experiences. Material things have a "hedonic treadmill" effect. According to this theory, as a person makes more money, expectations and desires rise in tandem, which results in no permanent gain in happiness. But experiences stay with us. Their memories bring us meaning, fulfillment, and true happiness. We can savor and cherish our memories and the positive emotions they bring us for a long time to come.
The bottom line is- Experiences Trump Things!
Last month Roger and I spent a week in San Diego visiting my brother Todd and family. My 82 year old Mom flew in from Florida to join us. What a fun filled glorious week we shared savoring being together. It makes me happy just thinking about and remembering! My goal in this second half of life is to explore the world full out, say YES to as many adventures as possible, climb mountains, enjoy the journey and be grateful along the way.
I love the final scene in the 1990 blockbuster movie "Ghost" when Sam (Patrick Swayze) says to his love Molly (Demi Moore) "It's amazing Molly. The love inside, you take it with you." So ultimately, we each decide which path to take....Things vs. experiences.
