FOLLOW YOUR BLISS became a favorite mantra when I was in my twenties. I lived by that motto and even had that bumper sticker on my car.
After graduating college, I wasn't looking for just any job. Some friends jumped right onto career paths. I knew I had a unique "calling" and began a quest following my passions. It wasn't a clear path and often felt like a scavenger hunt as clues turned up in unexpected places that took me all over the world. Looking back in the rear view mirror all these years later, I sure learned a lot. And I discovered my true purpose. :)
In Japanese, the word for purpose is "IKIGAI. It means your "reason for being." Essentially, it's your reason to get up in the morning. Everyone, according to Japanese culture has an IKIGAI, finding it requires a deep and lengthy search of Self.
It may not always be easy but it'll be worthwhile.
So how and where does one start to discover their IKIGAI?
If you can't figure out your purpose, figure out your passions.
- Your passion will lead you right to your purpose.
- Follow what lights you up.
- Follow what gets you excited and energizes you. Follow your BLISS!
Will I take after my Great Aunt and never retire? It's hard to imagine the future and ever stop doing something that I truly love. I'm forever grateful that I found my IKIGAI and for the journey that continues.
