In her book 'When Things Fall Apart', Buddhist Nun, Pema Chodra says, "Things come together and then they fall apart." Most of us may have heard and are familiar with the term "Post Traumatic Stress" but we haven't heard that there's another side of that coin. It's called "POST TRAUMATIC GROWTH."
Two years ago on the heels of Superstorm Sandy, I enrolled in a course in Positive Psychology. When I heard about "Post traumatic GROWTH," I knew I was in the right place. I wanted that!
Even the most difficult experiences can strengthen us and create positive change.
We may lose functioning for awhile and it often takes time to recover, but usually we bounce back and return to our baseline. And sometimes we spiral higher. We grow!
We feel greater overall appreciation. There is an increased sense of inner strength. A feeling of 'I can handle anything." We have deepened connections and richer relationships. We have shifts in spirituality. New opportunity may arise that we never imagined before. That's Growth under fire. Growth through challenge. Post traumatic growth!
Next time you're being challenged- bring to mind your stressor and ask yourself:
- What am I learning?
- What benefits might emerge from this?
- How might this strengthen me?
- How can I see this in a positive light?
I hope that you will always find the silver lining, spiral higher and grow. Don't ever give up! T.R.U.S.T. = True Resolve Under Severe Testing. Come visit us soon! We're here to help. We like to think of Therapeutic Touch as your peaceful island in a sea of turbulence!
