This past October my MOM fell and broke her hip a week before her 90th birthday. After all the X-rays and tests the doctor gave her 2 choices:
#1- She could opt for an immediate hip replacement surgery which would require roughly a month in rehab with arduous daily physical therapy and she would hopefully walk again (with a walker) and go home.
OR
#2- Opt no surgery, and likely spend the rest of her life in bed and never walk again.
It didn’t take long for Mom to make her decision. She said YES to hip replacement surgery. They got her up walking that first day. Yes, it was painful and very difficult but she persevered. She had her 8 children and 13 grandchildren rally around and from across the country, we cheered her on with phone calls, text messages, videos, cards and balloons. She buckled down. Step by step and day by day, she worked hard and was able to go home the day before Thanksgiving.
If there is one thing my MOM repeated over and over growing up and still today - she constantly reminds us that NOTHING IS EASY. That’s always been her message. She told us if you want something, ya gotta work hard. She taught us and instilled in us to never give up. She reminded us like a broken record that NOTHING IS EASY.
Sometimes when I hear her say this, I want to reply. I want to repond. I want to yell - why does it have to be so hard?
I came across a new message that I’ve adopted. I shared it with my Mom and I’ll share it with you. It’s called CHOOSE YOUR HARD.
Marriage is hard.
Divorce is hard.
Choose your hard.
Obesity is hard.
Being fit is hard.
Choose your hard.
Being in debt is hard.
Being financially disciplined is hard.
Choose your hard.
Communicating is hard.
Not communicating is hard.
Choose your hard.
Life will Never be Easy.
It Will Always Be Hard.
But We Can Choose Our Hard.
Choose Wisely.
I love this. It’s so true!
There are so many things that are hard.
Perhaps my Mom is right - Nothing is Easy.
Suffering is hard. Asking for help is hard.
She was given a choice and opted to face her broken hip head on…
Her choice: suffering or saying yes to surgery.
She opted for hope to walk again.
Knowing nothing is Easy. She chose her hard.
It’s a great reminder and wonderful gift that we always have a choice.
It may not be easy and it may in fact be really hard but it’s your choice -
CHOOSE WISELY.
Peace & Health,
Patti
